A Short Trip South

Hello, all you OnVallartaTimers! Finally, something to blog about!

Life here has been pretty slow and uneventful, as it has been, I’m sure, all over the world during this pandemic. Except for going to the beach and sitting among our small bubble of friends, and making weekly or semiweekly trips to the store to stock up, we’ve been sticking pretty close to home. Here in this foodie paradise town, with numerous world-class restaurants within a few short blocks, we’ve hardly been out to eat at all, just the occasional ordering in. It’s wonderful to be living in a tropical paradise, warm and sunny every day, but the days tend to run together after a while.

So to break up the routine, among said bubble while sitting at the beach, we hatched a plan. We three couples, Kris and Rich Connoy, Melissa and Jeff Utschig (along with Hannah, their dog), and Peggy and I arranged a trip a couple of hours to the south, just a little beyond the small fishing village of Tehuamixtle. We had heard from friends that an isolated resort, Cabañas El Cielito, was just the place for us to go.  We had already been to neighboring Mayto a number of times, so this would be someplace new to check out. We made reservations for three of the individual cabins for two nights, hired a van, and went on an adventure!

The margarita girls! Our first stop was the fishing village of Tehuamixtle. Our favorite restaurant was closed, but we still had an excellent fish fillet lunch with a beautiful view. Our eventual destination, Cabañas El Cielito, is just around the point in the distance.

Cabañas El Cielito. That’s the administrative office on the left. Those stairs lead up to Peggy’s and my unit.

The El Cielito restaurant. It was really quite good. Breakfast was included.

Another view of the bar and restaurant.

Our group of intrepid travelers. Rich, Kris, me, Hannah, Melissa, Jeff and Peggy.

The wash station of bathrooms at the restaurant.

Coco anyone?

Another view of the grounds. The landscaping was very nice.

The trail down to the beach.

Kayaks for the use of the guests.

The pool.

Another view of the pool. We spent most of our day here.

Peggy in her element.

Kris and Rich had a morning visitor at their cabin. It’s a garrobo, kind of like a smaller, black iguana but carnivorous.

A view of the grounds from the terrace of our unit at the top of the stairs.

The shower in our room. Not too private, but people on the beach are far away.

Our terrace. This became our group’s favorite happy hour/late night/hangout spot.

The view south from our terrace. That’s a fresh water lagoon.

The lagoon in the late afternoon.

Sunset from our terrace.

The moon was just past full when we were there.

As a parting shot, here I am engaging in one of my favorite activities!

Until the next edition! Peggy and I will be OnVallartTime!
